Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy
-
The pelvic floor are the muscles found at the bottom of your pelvis, beginning behind the pubic bone and inserting into a common tendon surrounding the tailbone. They are a multi-functional group of muscles affecting urinary, ano-rectal, and sexual systems. The muscles support and elevate the organs in the pelvis and directly impact core strength and stability. Like any other muscle in the body the pelvic floor needs to have strength, endurance, power/speed, and coordination with surrounding muscle groups. Pelvic floor physiotherapists are trained to assess this area, diagnose the dysfunction, and provide treatment options.

Your first appointment will be 60 minutes in length, and will begin with a comprehensive history about your concerns. Questions will be asked regarding your bowel and bladder routine, sexual function, past injuries/traumas, along with gynaecological and obstetrical history. After reviewing your information, our physiotherapist will take some time to educate you about the pelvic floor muscles using diagrams and models to ensure that you truly understand this area.
The physical exam will begin with an external orthopaedic assessment. The physiotherapist will complete a multi-plane function assessment having you complete movements in standing, sitting, and laying. This allows the therapist to accurately assess your individual movement patterns and understand the direct influence on the pelvis. Depending on time and your comfort level, an internal exam may be an option for the first visit but is not a requirement. As the pelvic floor muscles span the entire bottom of the pelvis, our physiotherapist is trained to perform both vaginal and rectal exams. Pelvic exams do not include a speculum, and are completed and graded by digital assessment. There are times when an internal component to treatment can be avoided, although with some conditions it is strongly recommended.

If this will be your first time in the clinic, we recommend that you bring along your insurance information as we offer direct billing to all major insurance companies. It is encouraged to wear comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement. If you prefer, you may bring another pair of clothes to change into. There is no preparation required for a pelvic examination. Menstruation is not a contraindication to treatment although your comfort level is top priority. Therefore if you would like to reschedule your appointment during this time, please ensure you provide us with at least 24 hours notice.
